About a month ago I had the privilege of going to the Managed Security Solutions Group annual customer conference. We intend to get our customers together once a year, not only to provide them a detailed view of our product roadmap, but also to present the opportunity to give us comments on our services as well as network with their peers. As you can imagine, it's a fascinating few days.

This year, I saw there was a single topic at the front of everyone's mind when it comes to managed security solutions these days how to deal with allowing workers to bring their own devices to work. How are we going to secure our employees' iPads, iPhones and Androids? My philosophy, which is based on those I discussed with, is that we should enable employees to use their own devices - it would make them more productive and agile workers who are quicker to answer client requirements. But, oh boy, does it bring in some headaches!

Instead of having fewer concerns on their horizons with managed security solutions today, 2011 appears to be loaded with new difficulties for CISOs. In addition to the challenge of handling non-homogenous devices, I think we'll be seeing more cyber-weapons like Stuxnet and other targeted botnets. Though it may be true that worms such as Stuxnet are intended to do harm to a specific type of devices, we need to be alert because we don't know what system might be next. This time it was SCADA systems, but the next time it may be financial trading systems, or maybe transportation infrastructure. Whatever it is, we can ensure that there will be a "next time" and that the speed at which exploits may be deployed is getting faster.

But of course, as CISOs and their teams are patching and defending, they even need to be displaying the effectiveness and worth of their security and risk management programs to the panel. While I am buoyed by the fact that there are no longer any questions that the CISO must have a seat at the boardroom table, we're yet confronted with the unenviable task of needing to justify paying for an activity; that if you're successful at it, nothing demonstrably terrible happens.

I'm a big advocate of Risk Registers and this year also liked discussing how we connect our BT Security Scorecard to the business to ensure our security strategy is correctly aligned with BT's business strategy. From my perspective, being liable for the security of a global enterprise, risk management should comprise of human elements as well as the purely technical elements. In coordinating my organization's risk register and security scorecard, I consider a full spectrum of risk from the geo-political to the purely technical. Human action and human intelligence are main aspects in both developing and preventing risk with managed security solutions nowadays. If we're just looking at risk management as something that an off-the-shelf box or piece of software can fix, then we're losing the mark.
